Headsmacking Tip #16: Meet the Linkerati in Person

We all know about the Linkerati by now - how to identify them, how they're segmented and why they're the secret to SEO. Yet, time and again, I see link builders and companies pass up amazing opportunities to earn links and attention from those who have the best ability to help your content/brand spread virally.
I'll lay out two scenarios below to help illustrate this point:
Scenario 1: Emailing a Prominent Blogger/Writer/Journalist/Site Owner/Social Media Personality/Etc. Hoping for a Link
You/your company:
  • Identify a list of Linkerati that may be relevant/interested in your business/content
  • Send a carefully crafted email to each individual, hoping to attract their attention and interest
  • Follow up with those who reply (and maybe those who don't) with emails or even a phone call
  • Request a review of your product/tool/site/idea
Scenario 2: Meeting that Same Person First, then Following Up
You/your company:
  • Identify prominent (or even relatively less known) Linkerati in your city or at an event you're attending
  • Schedule a meeting / invite them to coffee or to tour your offices (or even just go to an event you know they'll be at)
  • Introduce yourself politely and humbly and mention you're a fan. Exchange business cards, have a chat and let them know what you do (also helps if you can find some non-work related topics to bond on as well)
  • Follow up with an email thanking them for the meeting and asking if they'd take a look at your product/tool/site/idea
I'd argue that while Scenario 1 is more scalable, it's also potentially damaging in the long run. When you first introduce your work to someone who can help it spread, you have that single chance to make a first impression. If the relationship matters and you're seeking a high "conversion rate" for attracting attention from the Linkerati, use Scenario 2.
The beauty of these links is that they not only create value for SEO, but often attract second-order effects like increased brand awareness, links/tweets from the followers & fans of the Linkerati, and improved odds that you'll be positively remembered and introduced when someone mentions they need "X" (whatever it is your product/tool/site/idea does).
In-person connections have always been powerful attractors of value for me in the SEO, social media and startup worlds and when I see early stage (and mature, later-stage companies) engage in this fashion, it's almost always positive. Just make sure you're professional, candid, friendly and never over-bearing in your interactions; chances are you'll get much more than a link.

Headsmacking Tip #17: Use Your Bio as an SEO Advantage

Your online identity is going further, faster and with more impact than ever before, yet many of us miss out on the seemingly obvious SEO power of our personal and company biographies. It may be a headsmacker, but it's a good one - use your bio!
Personal/professional bios appear most frequently in four types of online sources:
  1. Your Company/Personal Website - for example, I have a bio on SEOmoz and here on my personal blog
  2. Events, Conferences and Webinars - here's my profile on the Searchfest site, on OMS and SMX
  3. Content or Causes you Author/Contribute to - here's an old piece on the Y! Advertising Blog, some content I contributed for Brightedge's blog and an interview I did with Mixergy
  4. Social/Web Profiles that Enable Full-Featured Bios - here I am on TED Conversations, on LinkedIn and Quora and
In many of these scenarios, I've not been strategic or smart about making the bio sections more useful for readers or optimal for SEO.
The image below shows some of the potential opportunities you can capture:

There's a few best practices to take away:
  • A great bio should have links - it's not just for SEO; users want to know, too! If I love a post or a piece of content or am inspired/interested by a line I read about someone, I should have the opportunity to learn more. That's why those links exist.
  • Co-citation is potentially important here. If I use the words "SEOmoz" and "SEO Software" together, there's a much better chance that over time, I'll get Google/Bing to recognize that the two are related. Currently, thanks to our history, they're much more likely to think that SEOmoz is a consulting company (I almost made "consulting" an image, just to over-emphasize that point).
  • Quantity of links and where they point is up to you. In the example above, I've got a lot of links - maybe too many, but because they're not aggressive with anchor text or clearly just there for search engines, it doesn't come across poorly (plus, as an SEO guy, folks might get suspicious if I didn't try linking in my profile!)
  • Length is often flexible - you may wish to work on several versions from the very short, one sentence snippet to the several paragraphs often afforded you on some sites/spaces.
I'm certainly not suggesting that we should all go stuff our profiles with obviously-SEO-intended links, using idealized anchor text for search engines to the point where it's barely readable. But, I would suggest that having an SEO review the strategy of evangelists, speakers and contributors of folks across your organization is likely a great idea. This is one of the most white-hat, natural and powerful forms of link building -- it's just poorly executed much of the time.
Recognize the opportunity - be as aggressive as you feel is appropriate with third parties who post your bio (to get the description you want) and be sure to think carefully about branding, co-citation and keywords.
p.s. Linkscape's web index just updated! New stats are below:
  • Pages:  41,806,430,494
  • Root Domains: 111,479,320
  • Subdomains: 387,061,888
  • Links: 423,876,083,081
  • % of Links that are Nofollowed: 2.18%
  • Average # of Links/Page: 61.69
  • % of Pages w/ Rel=Canonical: 7.02%
Check out the new data in OpenSiteExplorer, the Web App, the MozBar and our Labs Tools.
p.p.s. It's been a while since I did the last headsmacking tip (#16) way back in November of 2009! Hopefully this will spur me to re-visit the series more often.

Here are 7 Easy ways To Drive Traffic To Your Website

1) Relevant keywords

Example of keywords is "online business" look how many people search for competition daily, weekly or monthly and how the use of this keyword. Why A Good Link Builder Fail

A good website builder knows that fixed connections mean rank solid, but it is a constantly evolving challenge for them. Learn to avoid a loss of link juice now.

The links are very important to get the relevant traffic and a good position in search results, but the links are like any other ... they may fail. The following is a list of ten reasons that would otherwise reach the builders to "blow up their efforts. Be careful and do not fall into any of these traps. As the website builder that you have got to get this right hand, or you're heading for disaster.

1. One-hit wonder. Worst that can happen sites, stumble upon a source of links, or simply rely on a way to build links is that the accident or who intend to work really. This seems counter intuitive, but if you convince yourself that what you need you are going to fall. Need to diversify their work, and not all eggs in one basket.

2. Quantity not quality. Link to the manufacturer, who writes an article, it turns and then use an article submission software can easily develop 1000 links to a website in no time. The only problem is that links are worth almost nothing. Creating links is not just a numbers game. Links are worth the value of their origin. A link to a PR 4 links 1000 supports the 0 PR sites.

3. Forget that the webmaster is a person. E-mail requests for a link that is addressed to "Dear Webmaster" are the first to be erased. If you do not want a site for a backlink to take time to find a name for processing the application for.

4. Strictly digital. If you are an expert in your field, do not be afraid to tell the world ... face to face. Volunteers for delivering messages to your professional organization or even your local chamber of commerce. The story on your website will inevitably be a link to yours.

5. Depending on a black hat. black hat tactic works. From time to time, someone found a way to deal with the system and that someone had used was a short-term success. But success in the short term, and sometimes there are penalties that you get the site de-indexed. Black Hat is not worth the loss list.

6. Failure to keep pace with the industry. Link building, like so many aspects of internet marketing is constantly evolving. Do not be complacent. Do not rely on a strategy that can become ineffective tomorrow. Take an interest in the industry and keep you informed.

7. No support network. This is a real risk to the site of small businesses in more ways than one. You do not work in a store SEO great, and you can not walk on a colleague and ideas bounce off each other. Try to develop a network of talented builders site that you can seek help and be prepared to help them when they call you.

8. Loss of creative spark. There are more than one way to skin this cat bond. Keep an open mind to creative ways to get more quality websites to link to yours. To do something that deserves attention in your industry is a sure way to get relevant links back.

9. Building a perfect connection, which can not be applied. Action and consistency are more important than perfection. If you're one of those people who are afraid to click Send because you think your link request is not absolutely perfect, then just get over it. Live wild, and then click this button. incomplete connection requests will be value added to a full build relationships with the demands that are never published.

10. Becoming lazy. OK, you can change the lazy hypocrite, but it's the same thing. Link building is difficult and does not know nearly as much fun as the website design or even create the content. If you have successfully built some links do not count as they have been around forever. Continue working and that you continue to enjoy the high quality traffic.

Link building is a task that every web site builder must have at least a working knowledge of. If you find yourself falling into one of these ten common symptoms of the relationship problem, I will go and the efforts to double capacity. The son and the conversions obtained from the relevant links are the reward for the early implementation of this important function.

Hello I'm Ranking, So Where's My Traffic?

It's an old story – Boy meets Girl, Girl promises top rankings, rankings finally arrive, and Boy suddenly realizes he has no traffic. Wait, that's not quite it. Replace "Girl" with "SEO company" and "Boy" with "client" - yeah, there we go. In SEO, nothing is quite as frustrating as pouring time and money into your chosen keyword and finally breaking into the Top 10, only find that you still have no visitors.
There are a number of possible causes for ranking without traffic - I'm going to divide them up into 3 groups:
  1. You're Not Really Ranking
  2. Your Keywords Don't Deliver
  3. Your Results Don't Get Clicked
Isolating the problem is the best first step toward a solution and to making sure that your SEO efforts haven't been wasted.

(1) You're Not Really Ranking

Now that search results are increasingly being personalized, localized, saturated with ads, and otherwise moving away from the idea of one SERP for everyone, the most common issue with rankings not delivering is that everyone else isn't seeing what you're seeing. It's great for the ego to see yourself in the #1 spot, but it's not good for much more than ego if that ranking is an illusion. Here are a few reasons your ranking may not be what you think it is:

Your Rankings Are Personalized

Although personalization still only impacts a small amount of search results, it's always smart to do a sanity check. Unfortunately, shutting off personalization isn't as easy or reliable as it used to be, but there are a few steps you can take:
  • Log out of your Google account
  • Use the "&pws=0" parameter to shut off (some) personalization
  • Use a different browser (that you don't normally use)
  • Use a 3rd-party rank-tracker, like our own Web App or Rank Tracker

Your Rankings Are Localized

Technically, you could call this a form of personalization, but the local SEO portion of the algorithm is definitely a unique beast. If you have any business that's locally operated or where the search query has a local flavor, make sure to check that you're ranking outside of your region.
There are a couple of ways to sanity-check your local results. One is to tell Google you're somewhere else, using the "Change Location" feature on the left of search results:

Another option is on the analytics side. If your search traffic isn't up to your expectations, try segmenting it by country or city (as appropriate) to see what's really going on. For example, in Google Analytics, once you've selected your desired search traffic data, click on the second dimension pulldown (it should say "None"), select "Geographic", and you'll get a full list of options, including City:
Google Analytics geographic analysis
Of course, internationalization can also come into play. If you did your keyword research against Google.com, but you're only ranking on Google.be (sorry, Belgium), then you've probably overestimated the size of your target market.

Your Results Are Crowded Out

The days of the 10-listing SERP are gone, and there's an increasing issue on Google and Bing where the prevalence of paid search, local search, image results, video results, real-time results, news results, and other listings outside of the top 10 means that "pure" organic listings can be all but crowded out. Consider this sample search for "pizza place" here in my home-town of Chicago:

The purple line represents the "fold" on my 1280x1024 screen setting. Notice where the top 3 organic results are? If you're not ranking locally on this SERP, you've got nothing.

(2) Your Keywords Don't Deliver

The next most likely culprit is that you just didn't do your keyword research very well, or those numbers turned out not to be very reliable. There are a couple of variations of this problem:

Your Keyword Volume Is Low

Assuming you did your homework, the unfortunate truth is that most keyword research tools rely on Google's numbers, and Google's numbers aren't always accurate, especially as you dive into the long tail. Even worse, the numbers can say different things depending on how you slice and dice them.
For example, I have a site that ranks pretty well for "website checklist". If I looked at Google's numbers, I'd see 8,100 total monthly searches (global). Most of this is broad-match, though – looking at exact-match cuts that to less than 10% of the traffic:

So, if I had expected ranking on this exact phrase to be a traffic boon, I might've been disappointed. Many more people are searching for variants or longer-tail phrases that contain those keywords.

Your Keyword Doesn't Match Intent

This issue cuts a bit into section (3) below, but I consider it first and foremost a keyword-research problem. Let's say that, by some miracle, you manage to rank in the Top 3 for "apple" and that you're an online store that sells bulk fruit. While some people who query "apple" may be looking to buy apples, most of them are looking for Apple the company, Apple products, Apple Vacations, etc. If that ranking "victory" had cost you thousands (or millions) of dollars, you wouldn't feel so victorious when no one searching that phrase actually wanted to buy apples. You could've done a lot more for less with some action-oriented 2-word and 3-word phrases (like "buy apples online").

(3) Your Results Don't Get Clicked

Finally, it's important to remember that ranking is just the first part of getting search traffic. People have to actually click on your search listing. It's traditionally tough to get click-through data on organic SERPs, other than relying on gross stats on CTR by ranking. Fortunately, Google Webmaster Tools is starting to provide more of that data (under "Your site on the web" > "Search queries"):

So, what could make an otherwise perfectly good search result unclickable? There are a couple of major culprits (in addition to the searcher intent issue mentioned earlier):

Your Listing Just Looks Spammy

You've tried so hard to rank, that you forgot about the human element, and you ended up with a search results that looks something like this (generated with the Snippet Optimization Tool):

Would you click on that? Ranking is only half the battle.

Your Competitors Are Winning

This is a topic that gets discussed much more on the PPC side, but sometimes you're just getting outclassed. Maybe you're ranking, but the rest of the Top 10 is being dominated by big brands, great copywriting, great offers, etc. Make sure to know what you're up against.
Similarly, be aware of any ORM issues. For example, let's say you rank #1 for your chosen keyword, but the #2 spot is "Your Brand Scam" or something to that effect. Even if that listing is below you, it's going to make people think twice about your company and your link. Search rankings aren't isolated and people make decisions based on cues from the rest of the SERP.

So, Now What Do You Do?

While it's good to be aware of these issues, ranking without getting the traffic you expected isn't usually a lost cause. It's time to regroup, dig deep, and really find out why the numbers don't match up. You may learn a lesson in where your real audience is and what they're searching for, and you can use that to improve your overall SEO strategy. In many cases, ranking for one term is going to boost your chances to rank for related terms (you've still got good content and links), so you may just need a slight shift in strategy. Figure out exactly what went wrong, and take it as a learning experience.

How to Create Title Tags

A title tag, which is sometimes referred to as a title element, is an essential part of SEO. Of course, the overall content on your page will really help determine your ranking, but how carefully you create your title tag is not far behind in terms of importance. What exactly is a title tag? It is the text that describes or defines the title of your document. The title tag appears in three different places and is required for any document in the HTML or XHTML format.
Before we get into how you should create your title tag and what it should contain, let's take a look at the breakdown of some title tag basics. The length of your title tag is limited by search engines to less than 70 characters. Its format is key, and there are two standard formats that you should try to follow for the best results. Here they are:
Format 1: Your Brand Name | Your Primary Keyword and Your Secondary Keyword
Format 2: Your Primary Keyword - Your Secondary Keyword | Your Brand Name
As you can see, both formats are quite similar, so you should choose the one that suits you best.  Here is how the title tag appears in code:
<head>
<title>Your Title</title>
</head>
I mentioned earlier that the title tag appears in three different places. Each of these places are key to SEO for different reasons. Here they are:
  1. In the browser – You will find the title tag at the top of the browser window and as the label on the site's associated browser tab. Obviously, this placement of the title tag will help users with some quick reference as to what type of page they are on.
  2. In the search results – Look in the search results, and you will see the title tag listed atop each result with the website's link. If a user does a search query for one of your title tag's keywords, the search engine will highlight those keywords in bold text. Highlighted keywords make your result more visible to users, which in turn makes the probability of them clicking your link much higher. For this reason, keyword usage in title tags is extremely important.
  3. On other websites – If you are on a website like Facebook, you may see links to other sites. These links will usually use the title tag as their defining text.
Creating a solid title
While you want your title tag to be descriptive, you must keep in mind that it must also be concise. In other words, you will have to make your words count. Keep your title tag under 70 characters. Anything past that will be cut off by the search engine, so your full description will not be read by users.
Using keywords in your title tag is considered by many in the SEO industry to be an essential step to achieving a high ranking. Place your keywords as close to the front of the title tag as possible. A user will be more likely to click on your link if they see their keyword near the front.
As shown in the two title tag formats above, you can begin with your brand name or keywords. If you have a well-known brand name that you think will persuade users to click, place it at the beginning of the title tag, just as in Format 1.  If your brand name is relatively unknown, place it at the end of the title tag, as shown in Format 2.
Finally, when creating your title tag, think about a user's reaction to it. There are formulaic guidelines to follow, but you want to make sure your title tag makes a good first impression on a user. Since it is so visible in search results, you want your title tag to be as welcoming and attractive to users as possible.

Improve your Google Ranking 1st part

These bloggers are active in their communities. Below are the things that these bloggers have in their blogs that promote community involvement:
Facebook connect and social tools - These let readers share information in Facebook. They also let the author connect with their readers on a social platform to further discuss the topics relating to their blogs.
A good way to use Facebook to interact with readers involves creating a Facebook page, such as here: http://www.facebook.com/CommonGuyFilmReviews
Twitter - Another way for a blog author to get involved with his or her community of readers and followers is to use Twitter. Here is an example: http://twitter.com/commonguymovies
Letting users share information through social bookmarking buttons - Many if not most of a blog's readers may have social bookmarking accounts, so if they like your story they might share it in Stumble upon, Digg, Delicious etc., thus increasing your blog's exposure.
If you want to know why its important to get involved with your reading community, the following are the obvious reasons:
  1. By getting involved, you are interacting with your readers which makes them feel that you are a real person, not just a virtual or an anonymous blogger who is only interested in making money from their readers.
  2. The more you get involved with the blog community, the more your readers trust your blog and the information you give them.

Focusing on earning your readers' trust is a higher priority than focusing on attracting visitors from search engines. Trust can make you an authority, which will have strong impact on your blog ranking and long term reputation.
  3. The more authority and trust you have from your readers, the more likely that your blog will earn "organic links," which is often regarded as one of the most important ranking factors in Google.
You cannot become an authority and a trusted resource if you do not get involved with your community, contribute and interact with your readers. These readers will often link naturally to blogs that they trust and know the author.
Other tools you can use to get involved in the community include Google Connect and LinkedIn. You can even get involved simply by answering user comments in your blog.
Here's a summary of tips:
  1. Get involved with your readers by using social networking tools such as Facebook, Twitter, Google Friend Connect and LinkedIn.
  2. Use some social bookmarking tools to let your readers easily share your story on some of the most popular social sites, such as Facebook, Digg, Stumble upon, etc.
  3. Talk about and discuss issues with your readers, on your Facebook page, user forums and in your blog posts' comments section. This makes them feel that the blog author is a helpful, real person that they can talk to. This makes it easy for them to trust you, as well as your blog information.
  4. Earning trust and becoming an authority is one of the great methods of earning natural links for your blog in the long term.

You can see that a high percentage of the inbound link pages have the topic of "fashion," which directly relates to dcelestine.blogspot.com's blog topic. Related backlinks have a strong impact on Google rankings.
Another example is the link relevance profile of telugu-film-reviews.blogspot.com:

So, to answer the question: "How did these bloggers manage to get quality links?"
  1. They get the links from related blogs or websites.
  2. Although the way these links are earned cannot be confirmed, it is most likely due to partnership with related sites because of the author's involvement in the blogging community.
  3. It is very easy to get links from related websites, as long as you earn your readers' trust and become an authority on your website's topic.

For certain key terms, a few sites stand out. For example, for "film reviews blog," two results deserve further study:  commonguyfilmreviews.blogspot.com and  telugu-film-reviews.blogspot.com. For "pet blogs," internet-pets.blogspot.com is worth a look. For "fashion and jewelry blog," we'll look at three results: dcelestine.blogspot.com, in-vogue-jewelry.blogspot.com and profashionjewelry.blogspot.com.
This article will examine the SEO characteristics of these blogs and what makes them rank in Google for their targeted terms. The information gathered by this observation can be used by aspiring bloggers to optimize their blogs for the best results in Google.
Content is Still King: Consistency and Quality
One of the common characteristics of most these blogs is that they emphasize writing quality content on a consistent basis.
Another thing worth observing is the large minimum number of indexed pages on these blogs. Based on the sample provided, you can observe that most of them have indexed pages greater than 50; in short, all of the blog owners have written at least 50 posts for their blog.
A high number of blogs in Google's top 10 even have hundreds to thousands of indexed pages. Regarding the quality of the content, these blogs feature original content, and most of their blog posts are more than 400 words long.
These blog authors write useful and convincing content with the sole purpose of meeting the demands of their readers. The blogs' readers, especially those that are coming from Google, expect quality information, and these blogs deliver. You might observe that their content is not spammy in nature, and that the authors write naturally for their readers.
Another thing worth observing is that these blogs do not contain too many ads on their pages. Well, you might have seen that most of Google's "blogspot" users set up blogs just for Google AdSense. As a result, their blogs contain a lot of ads, but little content, which is a mistake.
But the top ranking blogs do not contain distracting or obtrusive ads. Instead, most of them even have no ads, or if they include an advertisement, it is clearly separated from the content, and limited.
This implies that these blog authors are not blogging just for the purpose of making ad income; they are blogging to write great content which is helpful for their readers.
Finally, they are not only writing quality content on a single occasion; most of these blogs are consistently updating and adding content.
To summarize what we've learned:
  1. Blog authors at the top wrote a lot of quality content. Most ranking blogs have at least 50 blog posts. Writing content is really hard work and a time-consuming activity, so make sure that you are creating a blog that showcases your expertise in a specific topic or niche (not just a simple hobby that you have just recently learned or things that just interest you).

This will ensure that you will never run out of helpful topics and ideas to write in the long run, which you can share with your readers. This is a very important blogging requirement that will help you stay motivated to write.

Most users of Google Blogger start a blog just to share something which they are not really good at; they're not an expert on that topic. As a result, they are not greatly motivated to continuously write for their readers. They then abandon their blogs, and all of their marketing efforts to get known and rank in Google, at some point in time.
  2. Write useful, original and convincing content for your readers. Since content is king, you should pay attention to this if you need to improve your Google ranking.

The logic is that Google ranks only quality content, and quality content is original, helpful and informative. Quality content is a strong factor in attracting organic links in the long run. This is why it is so important.
  3. Text content should not be spammy in nature; it should be naturally written. Do not fall into the mistake that some other bloggers make -- stuffing their pages with spammy tags and keywords.
  4. High-ranking blogs do not contain too many or obtrusive ads. Ads need to be separated clearly from your content. Make sure the content is more prominent than the ads. Obtrusive ads can make your blog appear less trusted to readers, which can affect your search engine reputation in the long run.
  5. Regularly update your the content.
